Budget panel backs Asian affairs commission

HARTFORD — A legislative proposal to create a
commission on cultural affairs for Connecticut’s Asian
community has cleared a big hurdle.
The legislature’s Appropriations Committee included
$155,000 in the 2009-10 budget proposal last week to
launch an Asian Pacific American Commission next fiscal
year.
The proposed allocation falls below the $250,000
requested by a grassroots Asian community coalition,
but a spokeswoman said it still would be sufficient to
launch the agency...
